Overview of Pandit Bhatkhande’s Literature

Pandit Yashwant Mahale, a sprightly octogenarian, is, perhaps, the last musician among the generation of stalwarts, trained in Guru- Shishya system under Bhatkhande Tradition. Even at this age, he utilizes most of his time on sharing his knowledge through participation in seminars, teaching senior disciples and guiding research students. Although he held a very responsible position in Life Insurance Corporation of India, he was fortunate to receive rigorous training in classical music for about 4 decades under the able guidance of renowned Gurus, such as, Pandit Vinayakrao Lele , Pandit G N Natu , Ustad Rahimuddin Khan Dagar, Acharya S N Ratanjankar and Pandit K G Ginde. Acharya Ratanjankar inherited a wealth of knowledge from Pandit V N Bhatkhande. Dr. Ratanjankar passed on the same to Pandit Yashwant Mahale with full confidence that he would meticulously preserve the same and ensure dissemination of the limitless knowledge internalized by him.

The author of the website, Sudhir Gadre, is greatly privileged to receive guidance from and active participation of Pandit Yashwant Mahale in the project of archiving the vast literature published by Pandit V N Bhatkhande.

Pt. Bhatkhande’s {Wiki Page https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vishnu_Narayan_Bhatkhande}
extensive literature can be broadly classified into four groups:

1) Books covering the theory of Hindustani Classical Music propounded by him and Compositions collected and notated by him- 17 Books documenting the theory of Hindustani Classical Music (H C M) evolved by him after critical study and analysis of Sanskrit treatises, and absorbing and documenting the prevailing practice of H C M by learning from stalwarts of different Gharanas. In order to preserve the heritage of H C M, he evolved a Notation System for H C M and notated 1898 Bandishes * (including 382 Bandishes composed by himself) - totalling to nearly 7,000 pages of enormous literature;

2) Editing and printing old treatises- 22 books- Editing and printing of manuscripts of old treatises on Music collected by him during his tours of different cities and towns in the country; and

3) Reports of All India Music Conferences-Reports of Five All India Music Conferences organized by him and

4) 4 Diaries documenting discussions with experts during the extensive journeys he had undertaken in different parts of India;

Some of the abovementioned books are used as text books or reference books and the same are available in printed form. Many books are also available in pdf format on some Document / Book Archives. The aim of this Project is to make available in one place the vast literature of Pandit V N Bhatkhande by providing soft copies or links of soft copies of books presently posted in different Archives, for the H C M Community and for the benefit of students of music and researchers. The project also includes soft copies of Biographies and Commemoration Volume and other books highlighting the great contribution of Pandit Bhatkhande in the field of Hindustani Classical Music in the first half of the twentieth Century.

The Directory of Pandit V N Bhatkhande’s literature available on the next page summarizes the details of the literature and links of soft copies of books available on this website or other archives. Efforts are being made to obtain copies of the books which we could not access so far.

Note - * It is highly commendable that 1898 Bandishes included in the 6 volumes of Kramik Pustak Malika are sung by Pandit Indudhar Nirody, a senior disciple of Pandit S C R Bhat and Pandit K G Ginde. Audio clips of the Bandishes can be heard and downloaded by students as they are freely available on the web site
